Joint Mobilization Technique

Joint mobilization technique is a manual therapy intervention, a type of passive movement of a skeletal joint. Joint Mobilization techniques focus on attaining a normal range of pain-free joint motion. Nearly every restriction in movement can be regained by a specific joint technique performed by an experienced physiotherapist.
The two major joint problems are:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint stiffness

These two symptoms can occur in isolation or they can occur simultaneously, which means you can have joint stiffness and pain.

Joint stiffness or a locked joint can be associated with any joint, muscle, tendon and ligament injury. Much like a door that doesn’t quite fully swing open or close, it runs into something and it becomes stiff and/or painful. The very common locked joints are stiff neck and stiff back especially lower back and pelvis.

For full and pain-free movement, joints need to move freely in all directions that they were designed to. If they become locked or restricted in any particular direction, you may experience pain and/or stiffness. And the good news is … joint mobilization techniques are performed by a gentle and pain-free maneuver to produce any or all of the following effects:

  • Improved tissue extensibility
  • Increase range of motion of the joint
  • Induce relaxation
  • Improve muscle function
  • Relieve pain
  • Reduce muscle spasm
  • Reduce soft tissue swelling, inflammation or movement restriction
