Therapeutic ultrasound is a physiotherapy modality that uses the mechanical energy of sound waves. As the energy within the sound wave is passed through the skin to the tissue, it causes oscillation and vibration of the particles inside the tissue, resulting in a deep and local heating that is usually not felt by patient.
The deep heating of the injured tissues that lie deep within the body can increase the fluid flow, especially blood circulation within the tissues, helping to bring the required materials for tissue repairment and wash out the waste materials and inflammatory cells. This will eventually reduce swelling, inflammation and pain, as well as promote tissue healing.
